Balance Assessment and Falls Risk Screening for Retirement Village Residents
Comprehensive balance assessment and falls risk screening delivered on-site in retirement villages. One in three Australians over 65 will fall each year — early assessment and targeted intervention can prevent serious injury. 99% of our participants show improved balance scores.
What Is a Balance Assessment?
A balance assessment is a series of standardised clinical tests that measure your stability, mobility, and risk of falling. Our qualified physiotherapists and exercise physiologists use validated tools to identify specific areas of weakness and design targeted programs to improve your balance.
Timed Up and Go (TUG)
Measures the time it takes to stand from a chair, walk 3 metres, turn around, walk back, and sit down. A simple but powerful predictor of fall risk.
Berg Balance Scale
A 14-item assessment covering static and dynamic balance tasks including standing unsupported, turning, and reaching. Scores range from 0-56.
Functional Reach Test
Measures how far you can reach forward while maintaining a fixed base of support. Indicates limits of stability and fall risk.
Single-Leg Stance
Timed test of how long you can stand on one leg with eyes open and closed. A key indicator of balance confidence and ankle stability.
Why It Matters
Falls are the leading cause of injury-related hospitalisation for Australians over 65. Each year, one in three older adults will experience a fall, and the consequences can be devastating — hip fractures, head injuries, loss of confidence, and reduced independence.
The good news is that falls are largely preventable. Early identification of balance deficits through professional screening allows us to intervene before a fall occurs. Our falls prevention program has achieved a 99% improvement rate in balance scores.

Our Assessment Process
Initial Screening
A quick screening to identify residents who may benefit from a full assessment. This can be done for all new residents or as a village-wide health check.
Detailed Assessment
A comprehensive one-on-one session using standardised tests (TUG, Berg Balance Scale, functional reach, single-leg stance). We assess balance, mobility, strength, and confidence.
Personalised Program
Based on assessment results, we create a targeted exercise program addressing your specific balance deficits. This may include individual or group sessions.
Ongoing Monitoring
Regular re-assessments track your progress. We adjust programs as you improve and set new goals to keep you progressing.
What Happens After Your Assessment
Your assessment results guide us to the right program for you. Depending on your needs, we may recommend one or more of these services.
Falls Prevention Program
Comprehensive program targeting identified balance and strength deficits with proven exercises.
Exercise Physiology
Science-based exercise prescription for residents with complex health needs affecting balance.
Physiotherapy
One-on-one treatment for specific conditions contributing to balance problems.
Balance & Strength Go Together
Balance and strength are deeply connected. Weak legs and core muscles are one of the biggest contributors to poor balance and falls. That's why our balance improvement programs always include strength training components. Stronger muscles give you a more stable base, faster reactions, and greater confidence on your feet.
Conditions That Increase Fall Risk
Several health conditions significantly increase the risk of falls. Our assessment takes these into account and programs are adapted accordingly.
Group Balance Programs
In addition to individual assessments, we offer group balance classes that are social, fun, and effective. Our group fitness classes include dedicated “Better Balance” sessions designed specifically for improving stability and confidence in a supportive group environment.
Results & Testimonials
Our balance assessment and improvement programs deliver measurable results. We track every participant's progress with the same standardised tests used in the initial assessment.
Funding Options
Balance assessments and follow-up programs can be funded through several government programs.
